History
The current City Store building was the first Gulf Shores Tourist Information Center, established in 1966, and was relocated and renovated in 1972, coinciding with the dedication of the W.C. Holmes Bridge. Throughout the 1980s, Wingard’s Jewelry Shop, operated by Al Wingard, was located there. Wade Ward Real Estate was the final tenant before the property was purchased and donated to the City.
Pictorial History Book
The City of Gulf Shores is proud to announce the release of Small Town, Big Beach, the first edition of a stunning pictorial history coffee table book that preserves, celebrates, and shares the community’s story with residents and visitors alike.
Spearheaded by the City of Gulf Shores and published and curated by PV Publications, Inc., this year-and-a-half-long project captures Gulf Shores’ journey from a small coastal town to a world-class destination — while honoring the people whose dedication continues to define it.
Filled with historic photographs from private collections and archives, the book offers a rare glimpse into the past through first-hand accounts from residents and local leaders. Stunning scenic imagery captures the natural beauty of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, while engaging narratives highlight beloved landmarks, cherished traditions, and the community milestones that have shaped Gulf Shores into the vibrant coastal town it is today.
Perfect for long-time residents, new community members, and anyone who loves the Alabama Gulf Coast, this pictorial history book serves as both a treasured keepsake and an invaluable record for future generations.
Additional copies of the book are available for purchase at the Gulf Shores City Store, the Gulf Shores Museum and online at www.gulfshoresgear.com
