[ARCHIVED] City Continues Focus on Meyer Park/Gulf Pines Neighborhood Improvements

Tile

City Engineer Jenny Wolfschlag presented an update at last week’s City Council Work Session regarding the traffic impacts on infrastructure and improvement projects in the Gulf Pines Neighborhood and Meyer Park area.

  • The City worked with Jacobs Engineering to complete a comprehensive traffic study focused on pedestrian and vehicle safety in the Gulf Pines and Meyer Park area. The study included detailed monitoring of current traffic speeds and patterns, with Jacobs analyzing data from Gulf Pines and adjacent areas to the east.

  • Now that the study is complete, Jacobs will provide recommendations for traffic improvements, which may include measures such as curb extensions, speed bumps, and other roadway enhancements. Jacobs is expected to present their findings and proposed solutions to City Council within the next four to six weeks. A citywide mobility plan is also on the table for the 2026–2027 budget cycle to evaluate transportation options for bikes, scooters, golf carts, and cars.

  • Landscape improvements at Meyer Park are being implemented to create a better barrier between vehicular traffic and pedestrian areas. The primary focus remains to enhance safety around Meyer Park and improve the pedestrian experience.

  • City staff are presenting a resolution to allow golf carts on neighborhood streets in the Pines area at the next City Council Work Session. This will improve connectivity to the west side of town.

  • The City is working with ALDOT to lower speed limits on 2nd Street, with a proposed 25 mph limit between 22nd and 24th Streets.

As these projects advance, more information will be provided through city channels. For questions or additional details, please contact the Engineering Department at 251-968-2425.
