Learn How to Control Your Technology
Every Thursday/Friday in January/February - 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. - Library
“Learn How to Control Your Technology” with the help of the Gulf Shores Public Library! The Thomas B. Norton Public Library offers many powerful resources available through its website. Come see how you can access these tools when you need them. Classes are limited to 12 people per class. Registration is first come, first serve. Patrons can register for classes at the Reference Desk through Reference Librarian, Nancy LeCrone. All classes will be conducted in the library’s meeting room. Please feel free to bring your own device.
Winter Video Series
January 16th, 23rd, 30th and February 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th - 10 a.m. - Gulf Shores Museum
Join the Gulf Shores Museum for their video series, “Alabama 200: The Stories That We Tell.” Videos celebrating Alabama’s history will be shown at 10 a.m. on January 16th, January 23rd, January 30th, February 6th, February 13th, February 20th and February 27th. January 5th - 9 a.m. - Gulf State Park
The City of Gulf Shores invites you to join us at Gulf State Park for Coast Riders. Come and enjoy short, guided family bike rides as we explore our beautiful local trails. Rides are on January 5th, February 2nd and March 2nd. Registration is encouraged. You can register at the Cultural Center, Bodenhamer Recreation Center or online.
ABCD’s of Medicare
January 7th - 11 a.m. - Cultural Center
The Gulf Shores Recreation Department is hosting “ABCD’s of Medicare” at the Cultural Center for all local residents and visitors. The Medicare seminars will be presented by Terry Patterson. The next seminar date is scheduled for Monday, January 7th. Seminars begin at 11 a.m. in the classrooms at the Cultural Center. Lunch & Learn
January 9th - 12 p.m. - Cultural Center
David Copeland will be discussing “Geocaching 101: What is it? Where are they? Who does it and why? How can I start?” This Lunch and Learn will be hosted at the Cultural Center on January 9th at 12 p.m. The cost is $5, and registration is required. Box lunch and drink is included in the price. Arts After School
January-March - 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. - Cultural Center
The Gulf Shores Recreation Department is hosting an after-school series for students in grades 6-8 that will focus on cultural enrichment and life skills preparation. There will be three sessions (one session each month):
January 7th and 14th: Music 101
January 21st and 28th: Drama and Theatre Arts
February 4th and 11th: Introduction to Cooking
February 18th and 25th: Bully Proof Self Defense
March 4th and 11th: Resume Writing
March 18th and 25th: Finance 101
Each session will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per session or $25 for all three sessions. After-school transportation is included in the cost. Pre-registration is required.
Mom’s Time Out
Every Tuesday in January-May - 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Cultural Center
Spots are starting to fill up for Mom’s Time Out! This program is designed to stimulate social interaction & allow free time to parents. Beginning on Tuesday, January 8th, your child will be able to spend every Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Cultural Center for fun fitness play, arts & crafts, story time with Mrs. Amy from the Gulf Shores Library & much more! The age requirements are 1 & walking (must have turned 1 by September 2nd) through 4 years of age. Parents must pre-register by 3 p.m. on the Friday before the day needed in order to receive the pre-registration cost of $20. Drop-ins are welcome at $30 a day depending on space. Parents may register for a full month for $50. You can register at the Cultural Center, Bodenhamer Recreation Center or online. Dive In Movie
January 11th - 6 to 9 p.m. - Bodenhamer Indoor Pool
Now Showing: Disney Pixar's Incredibles 2! Join us for a "Dive In Movie" on January 11th at the Bodenhamer Recreation Center Indoor Pool. The cost is $10 and includes pizza and a drink. This event is open to all ages. Unaccompanied children must be able to swim. Space is limited. Reserve your tickets today at the Bodenhamer Center or Cultural Center or by calling 251-968-4420. Bring your floats and join in on the fun!
Become a Gulf Shores Beach Lifeguard
January 13th, January 27th, February 10th - 11 a.m. - Bodenhamer Indoor Pool
Want to become a Gulf Shores beach lifeguard? Tryouts will be held on January 13th, January 27th and February 10th at 11 a.m. at the David L. Bodenhamer Recreation Center Indoor Pool. Applicants must be at least 17 years old. You must be able to swim 550 yards in 10 minutes or less and run one mile in under 10 minutes. Ask the Expert
January 14th, January 28th, February 11th - 2 p.m. - Gulf Shores Library
The Thomas B. Norton Public Library is hosting Ask the Expert on January 14th, January 28th, and February 11th at 2 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room. Donna Chard, travel counselor with BellaNova Travel, will speak on January 14th about popular travel destinations and answer travel questions. Jake Wallace, Financial Adviser from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, will speak about finance management and answer questions on January 28th. J. Thomas Moore, a retired Certified Financial Planner from A.G. Edwards, will be at the library on February 11th to answer any financial questions you may have. A bag lunch will be provided. This is a free event, but sign up is required.
Coffee & Announcements
January 14th, February 11th - 10 a.m. - Cultural Center
The City of Gulf Shores invites you to join us for a new event, “Coffee and Announcements.” Coffee and Announcements will be hosted each month starting in October and ending in February. This FREE program is for our 55+ community to learn about the events and happenings within the city. Wendy Congiardo and Deanne Fincher will be speaking on January 14th regarding the Gulf Shores Public Library, and Andy Bauer will be speaking on February 11th regarding the Planning & Zoning Department. Speakers & Socials
January 16th - 11 a.m. - Cultural Center
The City of Gulf Shores invites you to join us once every month for “Speakers and Socials”. This is a free program for our 55+ community held at the Cultural Center beginning at 11 a.m. A speaker from Gulf State Park will present on January 16th. Following our speaker, you are invited to join us for a BBQ lunch at 12 p.m. for a $5 charge. Please pre-register at the Cultural Center.
7th Annual Community Fit Fair & Wellness Open House
January 18th - 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Bodenhamer Recreation Center and Cultural Center
The 7th Annual Community Fit Fair & Wellness Open House returns to the David L. Bodenhamer Center and Cultural Center - Studio Fit on Friday, January 18th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is free and open to the public (you do not have to be a member to join in on the fun)! This event will feature the area’s top health and wellness professionals. Attendees can participate in wellness screenings, free aerobic & fitness classes, free chair massages, view exhibits and speak directly with health professionals to learn more about how to improve their overall well-being. Lifesouth will be on site during the event hosting an Emergency Need Blood Drive. The goal for the drive is to get 17 donations, which will help save up to 51 lives in our community!
100 Miles, 60 Days Weight Loss Challenge
January 21st-March 21st - Bodenhamer Recreation Center and Cultural Center
100 Miles. 60 Days. Can You Dig It? The Gulf Shores Recreation Department is hosting a FREE Weight Loss Challenge from January 21st until March 21st. YOU will be challenged to walk/run 100 miles in 60 days. The official weigh-in is on January 21st-27th at the Bodenhamer Recreation Center or Cultural Center (must be recorded by staff). PRIZES guaranteed for top male/female weight loss winners!
January 25th and 26th - 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. - Erie H. Meyer Civic Center
Due to high demand last year, the Gulf Shores Recreation Department will be hosting TWO Daddy Daughter Dances this year. The dances will take place at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center on Friday, January 25th and Saturday, January 26th, from the hours of 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $30 per couple and $5 for each additional daughter. Both nights will consist of a DJ, raffles, games, photographer and much more! These dances will sell out, so get your tickets TODAY! Tickets can be purchased at the Cultural Center or the Bodenhamer Recreation Center. This event is ticket entry only, no door entry. Author Visit and Signing – Edric Prim
January 26th - 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Library
Edric Prim, a local author from Loxley, AL., will be at the Thomas B. Norton Library on January 26th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to discuss, sell and sign his latest books. His book, “Reserve the Seed”, was written to help hurting, depressed, and suicidal people expose those dark places that ache in their soul. “Can I Have this Dance?” is a love story that all ages can enjoy. A story of hope, laughter, purpose, and principles. Life is a rhythm and God is a God of rhythm.

January 28th and 29th - 7 p.m. - Erie H. Meyer Civic Center
“Simply Sinatra” with Steve Lippia brings a performer who has become one of the most prominent, in-demand vocalists and has quickly established his place among the finest interpreters of “standards” and traditional pop music in the nation. Steve’s youthful, energetic talent and powerful show creates a perfect blend of “classic” with “today”. Valentine’s Dance & Chocolate Affair
February 8th - 7 p.m. - Erie H. Meyer Civic Center
Sign up today for the Active Adult Valentine’s Dance that will be held February 8th. Enjoy an evening of music, dinner and dancing. The cost is $15 per person. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tommy Morse Band starts at 7 p.m. There is no table reservations (first come, first seated). You must have a ticket to enter. BYOB (mixers will NOT be provided). Princess Tea Party
February 9th - 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Adult Activity Center
The City of Gulf Shores is proud to announce the first Princess Tea Party! This event will include a Tea Bar, dessert scones, princess crafts and crown stations. The cost to attend the Princess Tea Party is $10 per parent and 1 child ($5 for each additional child). Tea and scones will be provided by Copper Kettle Tea Bar. Princess costumes are encouraged! 2019 Winter Edition: One Night in Memphis
February 11th and 12th - 7 p.m. - Erie H. Meyer Civic Center
“One Night in Memphis” will present a rocking concert tribute to legendary Sun Records recording artists Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley on February 11th and 12th. Shows begin at 7 p.m. This performance features over 90 minutes of pure rockabilly, country, gospel and rock and roll in a very authentic and energetic presentation featuring nationally known talent. Get Wild: Camping 101
February 15th and 16th - 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. - Mo’s Landing (18068 Fort Morgan Road)
Come sleep under the stars at our beautiful waterfront Lagoon Park! The event will begin at 6 p.m. on February 15th and end at 9 a.m. on February 16th. The cost to participate is $30 per tent (up to four people) or $20 to bring your own tent (up to four people). This cost includes fire pits and an outdoor movie on the big screen. Author Visit and Signing – James Ozenberger
February 19th - 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. - Library
Join us at the Thomas B. Norton Public Library on February 19th at 10:30 a.m. for an exciting and engaging author talk with James Ozenberger, author of “Big Horn”! Set against the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming, this action packed adventure tells the story of greed, lust, murder, and cruel justice. There will be a book signing following the lecture. Refreshments will be provided.
