The City of Gulf Shores is holding a Special Council Meeting to discuss a proposed three percent lodging tax increase that will be used to fund various capital improvement projects over the next 10 years as opposed to sales or property tax increase. This meeting is open to the public and will be held on Monday, November 29 at 4 p.m. in the Gulf Shores City Council Chambers.
The proposed three percent lodging tax increase is projected to generate $6.9MM in 2022. If passed, the additional revenue will be used to expand transportation capacity, bolster public safety, increase recreation amenities, enhance education, and improve the quality of life for residents and the overall visitor experience.
“I want to be clear that our City has proven itself to be fiscally responsible year after year,” said City Councilman and Finance Committee Chair Jason Dyken. “This new revenue is intended to elevate our city from good to great by providing necessary new services, programs and infrastructure enhancements, demonstrating our fiscal responsibility and proactive budget management over this administration's tenure.”
Council consideration and voting on the three percent lodging tax will now take place at the December 13 City Council Work Session and Regular Council Meeting. This will allow additional time to receive feedback from residents and business owners. In addition, the 2022 City of Gulf Shores Annual Budget and 2021 Budget Amendment #2 will be voted on at the December 13 council meeting. Below is a detailed updated budget adoption schedule for reference.
