What can I build on my property?

• Browse through our online resources or contact the Planning & Zoning Department at 251-968-1164 to determine the approved zoning/usage for your property.

My project seems to meet all zoning requirements. What do I need to do to get my project started?

• The Planning & Zoning Department will be happy to guide you through the steps to get your project going. This process is typically started by Site Plan approval. Contact them today at 251-968-1164.

What may be required for Site Plan approval?

• Review our Site Plan Review Checklist to insure your review is expedited as quickly as possible. Contact the Planning & Zoning Department with any questions you may have.

What is the next step after my site plan has been approved?

• Prior to any construction beginning, a building permit must be secured. Contact the Building Department at 251-968-1150 to apply for your permit.

What will I need to obtain an building permit?

• If the property is located within a flood zone, elevation requirements must be met. (A surveyor or engineer will be able to assist you)
• Three sets of construction drawings must be submitted.

Are there any outside agencies I will need approval from?

• If your site is one acre or larger, a development permit must be obtained from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. Contact ADEM at 251-304-1176.
• If your site has wetlands, you are required to contact the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for any permitting requirements. Contact them today at 251-690-2325.
• If your site is adjacent to a State Highway, you must contact the Alabama Department of Transportation for a Turnout Permit. Contact ALDOT at 334-242-6626.
