Highway 59 Widening & Improvements

In an effort to create economic opportunities, improve traffic and pedestrian safety, and promote a more sustainable community The City of Gulf Shores has been awarded funding through the 2019 U.S. Department of Transportation’s BUILD Grant Program (https://www.transportation.gov/BUILDgrants) for an innovative, multifaceted project that will enhance the quality of life for our residents and visitors. The widening of Highway 59 and multiple improvements along the highway are also included in this funding.

Project Components

  • New Third Southbound Lane from Coastal Gateway Boulevard  to Fort Morgan Road (Hwy 180)
  • Hwy 59 Access Management
  • Intersection Improvements (L-Turn Lanes)
  • New Entrance & Access Management at Publix

Project Phases:

Phase 1 (BUILD Grant) – Ft. Morgan Road to Cypress Bend Drive (Target)

Project will be managed by the City of Gulf Shores.

Timeline:
Construction Begins: Summer 2023
End Construction: Summer 2025

Phase 2 (ATRIP 2 Grant) – Cypress Bend Dr. (Target) to Coastal Gateway Blvd

Project will be managed by Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

Timeline:
Construction Begins: Fall 2023
End Construction: Fall 2025
