Change your life for the better starting Monday - Couch to 5K!

Couch to 5K begins on Monday, February 25. This program is a training series for absolute beginners. Our goal is to get you off the couch and have you ready to jog/run the target race, the Zydeco & Crawfish Festival 5K Walk/Run, on April 20. The cost of the Couch to 5K program covers your registration fee for the Zydeco Festival 5K. You may sign up at the Bodenhamer Recreation Center, Cultural Center, or online by clicking here

"Let me start off by telling you about the day that changed my life a year ago, the day I saw the advertisement for the Couch to 5K at the Bodenhamer Center.  I had been wanting to do this program for quite some time but could never get motivated on my own (in other words it was easier to come up with excuses as to why I couldn't start that day and would start the next day and so on and so on).

As a child and teenager I dreaded P.E. classes, I was not the athletic type.  I had always been able to maintain a decent weight throughout my years, until I turned 40, it seemed like no matter what I did I couldn't keep the weight down and did not feel good about myself.

When I started the Couch to 5k last year I was 43 almost 44, hiding behind over-sized t shirts, wouldn't dream of putting on a bikini let alone want any one see me in a bathing suit.  My eating habits were not the best, fried greasy foods, eating out almost every day...... a heart attack waiting to happen.

Starting the Couch to 5k seemed intimidating and I have to admit I was a little apprehensive; but the program starts you off nice, easy and slow, it makes you feel like you can do this.  By the end of the program you are running/jogging a 5k.  Holly Cade our coach for the program didn't make you feel like you couldn't do it, she would encourage us as the running became longer that we can do this, do it at our own pace, not the pace of the others.

The longer we did the program the better I became.  I started feeling good about myself because I started to feel that I was getting healthier inside and out.  We started eating healthier and when we would go out to eat, I was making healthier choices for myself.

The day of the 5k was upon us. I know we were all a little nervous about how we were going to do and maybe a little intimidated by all the other runners there with us.  Finishing my first 5k was exhilarating, it didn't matter how fast we finished it, it was the fact that we did it!  It was the beginning of something that made me feel good and actually liked doing.  I didn't stop after that first run, I actually wanted to get up in the mornings and go, although I will admit some were harder than others.

Since starting the Couch to 5k program, I have ran several other 5ks, a 10k and most recently completed a Sprint triathlon (which I have to admit was really fun!)  I have a 10k slated and am looking at more 5ks to fulfill.  I am looking into more sprint triathlons and who knows maybe someday a full triathlon.  I have actually started using my membership at the center and attended some of the yoga classes and the fit classes.

I am happy to say that I am the healthiest I have been in my entire life, feel great about myself, not hiding behind oversized t shirts and actually bought and wore a bikini all summer!  Starting the Couch to 5k has changed my life for the best and would do it all over again."
