The City of Gulf Shores is excited to announce that the Gulf Shores Sportsplex is now an official STMA Environmentally Responsible Certified Facility. The Gulf Shores Sportsplex is the first facility in Alabama with this certification. Mayor Pro Tempore Philip Harris and the City Council recognized this outstanding achievement at the council meeting on Monday, June 24, as Recreation & Cultural Affairs Director Grant Brown and Assistant Director Matt Young presented the award to Parks & Facilities Manager Jeff Hopkins, Tony Egbert and Jennifer Morgan.

The process of certification requires the applicant to provide records of facility uses and environmental impact mitigation as well best management practices in storm water management, fertilization, pest management, recycling, composting, mowing, irrigation, water quality testing, pollution control, energy conservation, and educational outreach.

Since 1981, the Sports Turf Managers Association has served to advance professionalism in sports field management and safety through education awareness and industry development. STMA’s Environment Facility Certification Program was developed to document the environmental stewardship through the application of sustainable best management practices.
