Gulf waters remain closed in Gulf Shores due to extreme rip currents and high surf

Double Red Flag - Website

Double red flags continue to fly on Gulf Shores beaches due to life-threatening rip currents and high surf from Tropical Storm Cindy. The presence of double red flags indicates that extremely hazardous conditions are present and the Gulf of Mexico waters are closed to the public until further notice.

Public Safety personnel have received multiple reports indicating misinformation about local laws and ordinances related to the posting of double red flags.

In an attempt to remove any confusion, the City of Gulf Shores would like to clarify the following:

  • All Gulf of Mexico waters within the corporate limits of Gulf Shores are closed to the public until further notice
  • Swimming, wading, floating or any other entry into the Gulf of Mexico waters within the corporate limits of Gulf Shores is prohibited
  • Anyone entering the Gulf of Mexico within the corporate limits of Gulf Shores is subject to imprisonment and/or fines

Rip currents are life-threatening to anyone entering the Gulf and emergency management officials urge the public to heed their warnings and to stay out of the water.

Gulf Shores officials continue to actively monitor storm developments and will provide updates as they are available.  For additional information and weather related resources, visit www.gulfshoresal.gov/safe.
